Fisherman's boat capsizes, skipper drowns

Date Posted: 1998-12-25

A container ship passing Ishigaki Island radioed the Ishigaki Maritime Safety Agency reporting an overturned fishing boat and a body floating in the ocean, Monday.

The MSA dispatched a patrol boat to the scene and they identified the overturned boat as the 2.5-ton Seihomaru that had been reported missing a day before. They also retrieved the body of the skipper of the missing boat, Takeo Nakasone, 57. MSA officials suspect that the fishing boat had capsized in the rough seas sometime Sunday.

(Editorís note) Members of Japan Update staff fondly remember Nakasone. He was the skipper on our fishing trips to Ishigaki, always cheerful and best of all, could guarantee the catch. He is sadly missed.
