Date Posted: 1998-12-25

The Japanese Central Government budget draft for fiscal 1999 contains funds to open and operate an International Species Preservation Laboratory and Center in Neo Park, Nago City.

The purpose of the center will be to study methods of preserving endangered and rare species of plants and animals, both in Japan and overseas. The plan also calls for studying those species in their natural habitat.

Shigeru Higo, the managing director of the Neo Park was enthusiastic when hearing that his organization will get funding from the national budget. "This will enable us to do full-scale research in local ecosystems and also promote the study of nature among young students," he said.
