Golden Week holiday snarls traffic on Okinawa's highways

Date Posted: 2003-05-10

This year's Golden Week holiday season meant gargantuan traffic jams for anyone venturing up to the northern tourist spots of the island. The traffic was so bad that it reportedly took up to five hours by car from Naha to Nago Saturday, even on the expressway. According to the prefectural police, the lines at Kyoda expressway entrance in Nago reached up to seven kilometers both ways.

"We left our home in Naha about 9 a.m. and arrived at Nago about five hours later. And now we have to drive back. That is probably a similar experience," one exhausted father in his family car said. Officials at Okinawa Expressway Co. said that the traffic started to backlog about 6 p.m. and the jam continued well towards midnight Saturday.
