Okinawan anti-war activist joins Tokyo protest march

Date Posted: 1999-04-10

Okinawan parliamentarian Soko Shimabukuro joined citizens and academics at a Tokyo march Saturday to protest the government's proposal to upgrade and strengthen US-Japan military ties.

Speakers argued legislation aimed at updating defense cooperation guidelines would increase Japan's ability to wage war. Prime Minister Keizo Obuchi hopes to push the legislation though parliament before his May visit to the United States.

"By passing these laws we would only be paving the way to war," the Associated Press quoted Shimabukuro as saying at the protest, which drew a crowd of more than 700.
