'Usher'ing in some perfection

Date Posted: 1999-04-02

"This is how it should be done, cause my style is identical to none", Rap legends Eric B & Rakim announced on their now classic "You Know I Got Soul." Truer words could have never been spoken when singer/actor Usher took center stage last Wednesday night at the Butler Theatre on Camp Foster. Usher, accompanied by six dancers and his band - two keyboard players, one bassist and a drummer - sent the crowd into a frenzy when he opened the Mt Way Tour at about 8:15 with the song of the same name.

Continuing to work the stage like a seasoned professional, Usher launched into "Just Like Me" and never lost momentum. "How many of y'all remember the old school" asked Usher, as he proceeded into R&B singer Bobby Brown's 1988 "Every Little Step," "Rock Wit'cha," and "Roni," which he performed just like the original, including the dance steps made famous by Brown.

Before the show, I was also lucky enough to watch Usher rehearse with his band for almost two hours, directing its members and the dancers until perfection was achieved.
