Oil leak from U.S. tanker investigated

Date Posted: 1998-12-04

A small amount of crude leaked from a U.S. registered oil tanker Valiant, as the ship was unloading the oil at Henza, Yonashiro Town. The leak took place on Nov. 27, and the investigation by the 11th Maritime Safety Agency confirmed the source of the leak on Friday.

Officials at the 11th MSA estimated that the amount of oil leaked was about 30 liters. An oil boom was placed around the ship immediately after the leak was discovered which prevented the oil from floating away. Agency officials also quickly treated the slick with decomposer. The cause of the leak was an overflow. The MSA continues to investigate whether the overflow was caused by negligence.
