Chief scout of Orix Blue Wave commits suicide

Date Posted: 1998-12-04

The chief scout of Orix Blue Wave baseball team jumped to his death off of a balcony at a Naha apartment building, Friday. According to Naha Police, Katsutoshi Wada, 53, jumped from a 11th floor balcony of the building. He was pronounced dead at a hospital an hour later. Police ruled the death a suicide although no suicide note was found. He had left his wallet on the floor and removed his shoes at the spot where he had jumped. He reportedly had breakfast in a hotel with his colleagues in the morning, and then disappeared.

Wada had reportedly come to Okinawa in order to negotiate a professional baseball player contract with a student of Okinawa Fisheries High School. His recruit reportedly refused to talk to him, saying that he wanted to join a rival baseball team instead, and there is speculation that that might have made him despondent and commit suicide.
