Island Wide Champs!

Date Posted: 1998-12-04

Think of soccer and your mind goes to one of those sports channels. Think again; the champs are right here on Okinawa. On Saturday, Nov. 28,1998 MYA Soccer League, NORTH 1 won the championship game against THE BERGERS 2-1 at Futenma. Sherry Simmons, a freshman at Kubasaki High School, made the winning goal!

Sherry's teammates include sister Sharmy, Jacqueline Richards and Mike Porter all from Lester Middle School, Aiko Brown, Kayla Cochrane, Josh & Jonny Cartwright, Jason and Jeremy Lapetoda, Kate Bennett, Danielle White, Kenyatta Scarlett, Brad Pitts, Becka Mundy and Anthony Zickfoose all from Kubasaki High School. The team was lead to victory by coach Troy Teadt and Asst. Coach Kevin McVaden. "Strong" Forward player Jason Lapetoda did a great job while playing with a dislocated shoulder. Jonny Cartwright stuck like glue to Steve Berger keeping him from scoring. Talk about dedication - Jacqueline even gave up her BOYZ TO MEN tickets so that she would be rested for the big game!

To hear it--the game was won and lost in the first 20 minutes. While it was a beautiful day, the wind was a major factor.

This is the third time these two teams have met, with the scores of the matches being 3-2 Bergers, 4-1 North 1. Leading scorer for North 1 this season was Josh Cartwright, backed up by Jason Lapetoda, Jonny Cartwright and Sherry Simmons. The team and parents would like to extend a special thanks to that outstanding volunteer who took Anthony under his wing and coached him for the goalie position. So…man in the blue shorts…you're the best!
