International Carnival

Seven thousand people marched in a parade on Gate 2 Street and thousands more cheered on during the Okinawa City International Carnival, held over the weekend. American participants in the parade featured the flags of their respective states.

Of the seven thousand in the parade, more than 600 people represented the various nationalities residing in Okinawa City. The city prides itself of being the most international of all Okinawan cities. The nationalities included American, Indian, Thai, Pakistani, Indonesian, Chinese, and Korean, among others, many of who marched dressed in their colorful native dresses. Groups representing 14 Okinawan youth associates performed Eisa dance. It took more than four hours for the parade to proceed from Koza Intersection to Kadena Gate 2 area.

The event also attracted a large number of tourists from outside the prefecture. "I have never seen such great friendship carnival. Everyone was so enthusiastic," one female tourist from Osaka gushed.
