Nakazato fails to win super bantam title in Tokyo

Date Posted: 2003-05-03

Okinawan boxer Shigeru Nakazato failed to win the WBC World Champion title in a match against Oscar Rios of Mexico in Tokyo on Sunday.

Although he was able to go all ten rounds, Nakazato lost on points. All three referees had Rios as the winner. Rios was the clear favorite before the match, having much more experience than Nakazato, who has fought 29 matches in his professional career, winning 23 and losing six. Rios has 52 matches under his belt with 48 wins, three losses and one draw.

More than 100 fans had accompanied Nakazato to the match, including his wife Tomoko and their son. However, despite his fans' enthusiastic encouragement, Nakazato was no match for the harder-hitting Rios. Still, boxing fans expect Nakazato to challenge for the championship again in the future.
