Gangsters arrested on suspicion of selling thinner to children

Date Posted: 1998-10-30

Naha City Police arrested three gangsters on suspicion of selling paint thinner to elementary and junior high school children, Saturday. The police point out that selling paint thinner to be used as a drug is illegal in Japan. The police say that the three are suspected of selling thinner to children at Shirogatake Park in Naha City. Arrested were Kanei Niizaki, 48, Terumi Nagata, 25 and Hitoshi Oshiro, 23.

According to the police investigation, Niizaki sold a bottle of the thinner to Oshiro, who then sold the thinner to children. The police estimate that more than 50 children bought thinner from the suspects in a month. Investigators also say that Niizaki has been selling thinner to children since the end of 1995. The police are now trying to investigate the source of the thinner and whether or not there are the others involved in the incident.

Shirogatake Park, where the suspects sold the thinner is a well-known hangout for children who sniff thinner in the park nighttime.
