Local orphanage celebrates American holiday

A beneficial aspect of living in Okinawa is maintaining an active role in local events and inviting the Japanese to events on base. The Community Action Council (CAC) along with other members of the 18th Communication Squadron just hosted a successful beach party for the Ishimine Children's Home (ICH), and is now getting ready to introduce 45 orphans from the ages of 10-18 to a Halloween celebration on Kadena Air Base. Over 40 civilian and military volunteers and 7 staff members of ICH will prepare the children for Halloween by putting make-up on and providing them costumes to wear. The volunteers will then take them trick or treating, dining at Burger King, and then to the 18th Communication Squadron's Haunted House on Kadena.

Ms. Yoko Kishimoto who works for the 18th Communication Squadron hopes that this event will educate the children about some of the traditions of Halloween and why Americans celebrate it. She also said "Many Okinawans, especially small children, don't know much about volunteering and what it means to be a volunteer. Americans volunteer their time effortlessly at home and in foreign countries, and she thinks the Japanese can learn more about volunteerism." On the American side, Lt. Diane Benavidez said "We can learn a lot about the Japanese culture through social interaction, thus understanding both sides of the coin." CAC's President, Ray Richards, thinks helping people less fortunate promotes a more positive image of Americans and lets the local people know that there are many people who care about other human life. If you're interested in volunteering for the Christmas party and Angel Tree for the Ishimine Children's Home and other activities, please call CAC's President, Ray Richards at 938-1111, ext. 634-3390. The Haunted House on Kadena Air Base will be open to everyone island-wide on October 29th, 30th, and

31st from 7-11P.M. The cost will be $2 or 300. From Gate 1 turn left at Four Diamonds Softball Fields, then turn right at the 4-way stop and follow the signs. However, from any gate on Kadena, you'll see large signs directing you to the Haunted House. Any further questions about the Haunted House call 634-1078. Note: Due to an overwhelming response from the community, they do not need additional volunteers for the Haunted House.
