Naha celebrates the Kingdom Festa in RyukyuDate Posted: 1998-10-18 On Saturday, Oct. 10, the giant Naha tug-of-war will be held from 1 - 6 p.m. The total length of the rope is 172 meters, and with a weight of 26 tons, the Naha rope is the largest in the world, and holds the record in the Guinness Book of World Records. A portion of Highway 58 will be closed for the competition. The festival committee members invite everyone who is interested to come down and either join in with the competition or observe Okinawa’s, and the world’s, largest tug-of-war. More than 250,000 people are expected to attend this year, and many of them will be cheering on the east side of the rope. On Saturday, Oct. 17, a Kacharsy Dancing Festival & Friendship Parade will take place along Kokusai Street in Naha City. The dance runs from 4 to 9:30 p.m. throughout downtown Naha and on Kokusai Street and the Friendship Party takes place from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. at Paletto Kumoji’s mini fairground area. The celebration is only one of the many being held around Okinawa during the Kingdom Festa in Ryukyu. Everyone is welcome to attend and there is no cost to participate. Committee members are expecting a crowd of at least 10,000, including Okinawans, tourists, foreigners, neighbors and children. Along Kokusai Street, participants will catch view of beautifully costumed ladies, gentlemen and children performing the traditional Kacharsy dance, a fast-paced traditional celebratory display. the organizers extend a special invitation to all foreign residents of Okinawa to join the fun. |
