Be-bop to the oldies as you enjoy Pasta-ko's Italian dishes! Mr. Hiroaki Nakayone, owner of Pasta-ko, loves 50's and 60's music and paraphernalia, therefore the family style restaurant's decor is filled with old American posters, clocks, slot machines, a gas pump, T.V., etc. Self-trained chef Nakayone has been in the restaurant business for several years, but opened Pasta-ko only 5 years ago. The name Pasta-ko comes from pasta obviously and the -ko stems from "many Japanese women's name end in -ko, so he thought it would be a cute name." Pasta-ko offers pasta (750), macaroni or rice gratin (650), appetizers (600), toast (200), salads 700), pizza (980), wine per glass or bottle (2000), beer (500), desserts (300) and soft drinks, hot tea and coffee (350).

From the 17 different pasta dishes, chicken and bacon in a light cream sauce, shrimp chili, and seafood spaghetti are frequently ordered by Americans. For those with a hearty appetite, a larger helping of pasta, macaroni or rice gratin is only an additional 200 Also, with the pasta or gratin dishes for an additional 350, you can get bread and drink or a salad and a drink. During lunch time, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday through Wednesday and Friday &Saturday, every week there will be a few selected items to be served with salad, toast, and all the tea or coffee you want for 780 yen! In the evenings from 5-11 p.m., Nakayone gives you 50% off of a glass of wine on Monday and Saturday, bacon salad on Tuesday, pizza on Wednesday, and beer on Friday. The spicy meat rice gratin and shrimp and spinach gratin, both mixed with a cream and tomato sauce topped with mozzarella and breadcrumbs, were quite delicious.

I was pleasantly surprised at how delicious the real bacon pieces tasted on top of the lettuce, corn, tomato, and egg salad, which sells for Y700. Another unique salad was the beef shabu-shabu (boiled beef and vegetables) that was also 700. The margarita pizza for 980 is another favored item on the menu. Some of the appetizers include fried and garlic fried potatoes, fried cheese sticks, and grilled sausage. To make the dinner complete, Pasta-ko offers chocolate, rare cheesecake, custard, and marron cake sets with a choice of Coke, tea, coffee, or orange juice for 460. Bring your family and let Pasta-ko take you back to the 50's.

Pasta-ko is open from 11 a.m. to 12 a.m. Friday - Wednesday. (The last order is taken at 11 p.m.) You may make reservations but it's not necessary. They do have an English/Japanese menu available.

Directions: Coming out of Kadena Gate 3, take a left towards Kadena Circle. About 500 meters before Kadena Circle, you'll see the building with Manga and YOMU YOMU and Pasta (the -ko is written in kanji) written on it. The parking lot underneath the building is small. Pasta-ko is on the second floor. Tel.# 098-957-3765.
