Kick up yer heals

Well sometimes you have to practice what you preach. Some friends of the Partyman decided to take me out to hear some country music..heard that rumor that I can two-step and took me out to someplace where I could. Once again proving to me what I already knew. To be a true party animal you have to be able to swing in any crowd. More on that in a moment.

For a little taste of something different, Jet Club on Gate 2 street is having a poetry reading on 19 Sep. If you’ve never been, this is a cool event. You can read your own poetry. In fact, most do. Otherwise, it’s open microphone format so you can get up and read aloud what you’ve been jotting down on napkins, scraps of paper and notebooks. "But Partyman, that’s not a party," you say? I say a party is any event where people can get together and have a good time. I’ve been to these events in the past and it’s a bit of elevation for the soul. Everyone is welcome at Jet Club and you can find it about three blocks up on the left hand side as you leave Kadena’s Gate 2.

This week’s Pick of the Week is the little known but well designed Western World. I have to be honest. It’s hard to not have a good time in this place whether or not you listen to Country and Western music. Western World has a small diner to get your grub on, a beer bar and a liquor bar. It also has what frequenter Michelle Kraklow calls "the most important feature of any country club," and that is a large, well maintained dance floor. And boy can these people dance. I saw people Swing, Cotton-Eyed Joe, Line Dance, Electric Slide, Watermelon Crawl and Tush-Push. Other features of Western World include a mechanical bull (with settings from slow grind 1 to bone-jarring 8), and a haunted mine shaft for you to take your date for a scare. There’s even a country-wear concession stand operated by Michelle McGee; you may remember her from her old on-base stand. Every 2nd and 4th Saturday is a mechanical bull rodeo competition, every 3rd Saturday is a shooting competition and they have a dance contest, well, whenever they feel like it. Though they’ve recently had to start a $2 cover charge, Saturday is ladies night giving free admission to women and a free drink as well. Western World has $1 draft beer happy hour daily from 5-7pm and party groups are welcome.

To find Western world, aim for the main entrance to the Southeast Botanical Gardens. Coming out Kadena’s Gate 3 simply follow the signs to the Botanical Gardens. From Hwy 329 turn left on Hwy 23 (between the San A and Kentucky Fried Chicken) and follow the Botanical Garden signs. On the way you cannot miss the huge Western World sign. Parking is plentiful and free (no risk of towing). If you have been looking for a place to kick up your heels, if you’d like to learn (they offer free dance lessons) or if you just want to see what all the gosh darned fuss is about, come on and party at Western World.

If you see the Partyman there, be sure to say, ‘Howdy.’

See, now this is what I mean. I know there are other great places out there. It’s Hispanic History month. Any Tejano events going on? If you know of any event that you think should be featured as a Pick of the Week, Call Japan Update at 098 934 5716, fax 098 934 5690 (Attention PartyMan), or e-mail partyman@japanupdate.com.
