Date Posted: 1998-09-25

On Monday, a local committee, which decides the names of new town and villages on Okinawa, decided on "Omoro-machi" as the name for Naha’s new central area. The name was chosen from 1,781 entries.

The chairman of the committee explained the meaning of the name. "Omoto means feeling, emotion, or hope." Machi is a Japanese word for town. The chairman commented that he would like to make the new central area of Naha a center for international business and combination of past history and the future.

Mr. Yasuhara Oyadomari, Naha City Mayor, approved of the name chosen by the committee. The name will be announced officially after Naha city council grants its permission to the committee.
