Okinawa General Bureau informs fluorocarbon problems

Date Posted: 1998-09-18

Okinawa General Bureau held a workshop to teach about collection of fluorocarbon gases. In the workshop, associations and representatives from car and electricity service businesses in Okinawa were informed about effects of fluorocarbons on the earth’s ozone layer. Officials from the General Bureau pointed out that the attitude of the Okinawan people to collecting fluorocarbons from discarded home appliances and car air conditioners leaves much to desire as they are behind other prefectures of Japan in recognizing environmental problems.

An official of the Environmental Protection Section at Okinawa Prefecture Government said that the prefecture had plans to establish a working group to measure this problem by September. He said that they were also preparing procedures to totally collect and dispose of fluorocarbons by next year.

According to a survey on the collecting fluorocarbons that was conducted in February, only 15 percent of cities and towns in Okinawa collected the gas. The percentage is the lowest in Japan.
