Assembly elections held in many municipalities

Assembly member elections were held in 33 cities, towns and villages of Okinawa, Sunday. The total number of candidates in the election was 723, of whom 530 were elected. 77.4 percent of the electorate headed for the polls, meaning that the voter turnout was worse than in the last election even though the time when the ballots were open had been increased by two hours and rules on absentee voting had been eased.


The biggest significance in the election was an increase in the number of female candidates who won.. In Chatan and Sashiki towns, a woman was elected in the assembly for the first time ever. Also, nearly of all incumbents were able to maintain their seats.
