Naha Marina gets a new face liftBy: Kenny Ehman Date Posted: 1998-09-18 One of the biggest changes will be the increase in size of the fifteen year old port. Its capacity for mooring leisure boats has increased from twenty three births to fifty births. The additional 27 new births are already filling up with pleasure boaters looking to take advantage of Naha's proximity to Chibishi and the Kerama Islands, which are both known as some of the best areas for diving in the world. The marina will still offer all of the same basic services it did in the past. Boat charters for trolling can be reserved for about ¥100,000 per group of up to five people. Diving courses are available for ¥52,500, which will get you certified in three days. Non-divers can still take advantage of the clear waters surrounding Chibishi with a ¥9,000 snorkeling tour, and jet ski rides can be had for ¥4,500 per hour. On land, visitors to the marina can enjoy dining at the newly opened restaurant. The simple wood decor will make any sailor feel at home, and the second floor offers a fantastic view of the sunset all year round. It's a nice place to relax with a cocktail, while you watch the sun sink below the East China Sea. As night falls, you can see the lights of the ships pulling in and out of Naha Port. If you wish to satisfy your appetite, Naha Marina's menu offers you several dishes to choose from. You can order a Filet Mignon steak or a US Sirloin for ¥2,000. Grilled Lobster is listed for ¥2,500, or you can try the Salmon Meuniere for ¥1,300. You can also get the combination Lobster and Sirloin for ¥3,000, or the Salmon Meuniere and Sirloin combination for ¥2,500. If neither steak nor seafood seems to satisfy your hunger, then you can try the Pork Cutlet for ¥1,300. If you have come to drink, then you can get cold Orion draft for ¥600. The same price can also get you bottled Miller, Budweiser, or Kirin. A list of cocktails for ¥800 to ¥900 include Mai Tai, Blue Hawaii, Tequila Sunrise, Margarita, Long Island Ice Tea, and Singapore Sling just to name a few. Wine, whisky, and bourbon are available, as well as several soft drinks. And, there are many snacks to choose from. The Naha Marina has always been popular with Americans and other foreigners in the past, and the management is hoping the trend will continue. There are English speaking staff to make ordering easy, and to help everyone get into the partying mode on the weekends, they are offering live entertainment on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night starting at 7:30 pm. Be informed that an extra charge of ¥200 will be added to your bill during those hours. The restaurant is open everyday from 11:30 am until 11 pm. So, if you're looking for a new place to hang out at, give the "new" Naha Marina a try. To get there, head south on Highway 58 from Kadena. When you reach the bridge leading into Naha, do not go over it. Stay to your left and head down the road that leads below the bridge. Turn right at the second traffic signal and head for the ocean. As you near the end of the road, you will pass the Aja Port ferry terminal on your left. Make a right at the next corner and the marina will be on your left.
