Water-related accidents high this summer

Date Posted: 1998-09-04

A division of the Prefecture Police which measures water-related incidents announced recently that there were 20 accidents, resulting in the death of 11 people, during the July 21 - August 31 summer season. The number of deaths this summer exceeds that of the same period in 1997.

Seven of the 20 incidents involved children, and a total of four youngsters died as a result of a water-related accident. Most accidents occurred when the child swam alone or when parents or adults were not supervising them properly. Due to the divisionís findings, an announcement was issued to all Okinawans and beach-goers to, "Please pay attention to children who are swimming in the sea from now on," referring to the fact that beaches on Okinawa are usually crowded until October.

The accident victims included four people who were in their 40s, three teenagers, two individuals between the ages of 50 and 60, and two children who were under the age of 10.
