Exchange Summit concluded at Busena Terrace resort

Twenty one delegates representing governments and various regional organizations of China, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam and Japan gathered in a summit held over the weekend at Busena Terrace Beach Resort in Onna Village, Okinawa. The delegates gathered in the Asia-Kyushu Regional Exchange Summit in Okinawa in order to contribute to the further development of friendly relations and the expansion of exchange between the regions of Asia, as the joint communique issued after the summit explained the purpose of the meeting.

Okinawa Governor Masahide Ota was among the attendees at the summit. He stated that as the countries seem to be gradually losing their borders, especially young people tend to travel and study abroad. "Young people in Okinawa and elsewhere have a lot of opportunities for friendship exchange, but they have less opportunities to study in foreign countries. I would like to work to ease the limits for studying in a foreign country, especially within Asia-Pacific region," Ota said. He also suggested a similar summit specifically for women organizations. "We have many powerful women who are active in a variety of fields, and I think that a special women’s summit would be very useful," Ota concluded.

The theme of the summit was "Regional Exchange and Human Resource Development." The keynote speech was given by Former Philippine President Fidel V. Ramos. In his speech, Ramos stated that modern high technology was the key to the rapid development the countries in the region hoped for. "In order to ensure a stable economic development we have to invest in modern high technology and science. The best way to accomplish this is to join forces and focus on progress through improved education By joining our power and focusing our energies we can overcome any obstacle." Ramos concluded.

In the course of the summit, representatives of regions and organizations gave representations on various aspect of the theme of the summit. At the same time they engaged in a serious and constructive debate over the issues affecting the region no and in the future.
