Naha's Manko swampland to be officially registered sanctuary

Date Posted: 1998-08-21

The Ministry of Environment decided to register Manko area in Naha City as an important swampland and home to large number of species under an international treaty. Manko will be the 11th area in the nation to be registered.

Ministry officials confirm that they already have agreements from Okinawa Prefecture, Naha City and Tomishiro Village. The formal recognition will be announced by the end of the month.

Manko is a lake on Kokuba River located between Naha City and Tomishiro Village. It is the home for mangrove and about 70 species of birds. It was designated a specially protected area by the Environment Ministry last year because it is a sanctuary for many species of migratory birds.

Officials at the ministry pointed out that because the area is located in the middle of heavily urbanized area, it is important to register it and give it an official status in order to preserve it to the future.
