Temperature hits records in Naha, Kume, Nago

Date Posted: 1998-08-21

The Okinawa Meteorological Observatory has confirmed what many have felt, the temperatures in Okinawa have been record high recently.

According to the observatory, the temperature reached 34.7 degrees centigrade in Naha City, Monday. It was the second highest temperature ever recorded in Okinawa, and broke the record for August. The temperatures elsewhere in the prefecture were also record high reaching 34.3 degrees in Kume Island, 34.1 degrees in Nago City and 34 degrees in Miyako Island.

At the same time, many outlying islands have received hardly any rainfall and that combined with the higher than usual temperatures is expected to cause damages to agriculture. Officials at the observatory say that high temperature will likely continues another week or more.
