Revitalization for Nago mall sought

Date Posted: 1998-08-14

The Japanese government and Okinawa Prefecture have announced their joint plan to revitalize the Nago Shopping Mall that extends on both sides of the city's main street. Because of the current harsh economic realities, many small shops in the mall have closed their doors for good, and new entrepreneurs have not shown up.

Now the authorities have set up a support fund of 30 million to help lure new businesses to the mall. This is the third instance where the government has set up a similar program to revitalize a merchant area.

The plan calls for offering to pay the rent for new businesses locating in the mall up to next March. Events to lure customers to the area are also planned. Anyone with a business idea can apply and Nago residency is not a requirement.

Chairman of the Nago Chamber of Commerce and Industry Morihide Ogido welcomes the plan. "This mall is in the very center of the city, and it is very important to attract customers and businesses in the area in order to preserve our city " he said.

Applications for new businesses are accepted until Friday, but the deadline will be extended if enough applicants do not show up. For more information, call Nago Chamber of Commerce and Industry at (0980)52-4243.
