Dive services for non-military foreigners offered

Date Posted: 1998-08-14

Many foreign residents on Okinawa do not have a military ID card to gain access to base dive shops. Now they have an alternative dive shop off base, catering to English speaking divers.

Dive Shop Fathoms is located in Yomitan on Highway 58, just a short drive north from Kadena Circle. The shop offers all levels of PADI classes, from beginner to instructor, daytime and nights, weekdays and weekends. They also offer boat trips to Keramas and other locations.

Fathoms goals include unmatched customer service, prices competitive to those offered on base and working with people with unusual schedules. Fathoms also caters to people who want to further their diving education. They offer Advanced and Rescue classes virtually anytime and sixteen specialty activities for divers desiring to gain their Master Scuba Diver rating.

Divemaster and Assistant Instructor classes are offered to those who want to become professional divers. Fathoms also offers divers the opportunity to have their dives photographed, so they can have pictures to send back home.

The owner of Fathoms, Richard Ruth, has more than ten years experience diving in the Pacific and has been an instructor for five years. Being a PADI Course Director allows him to offer both Instructor classes and Instructor level courses. To contact Fathoms, call 080-766-0868, fax 098-956-6191, or e-mail at diveoki@fathoms.net
