Mystery noise raises questions among residents

Date Posted: 1998-08-07

Many local residents reported hearing a mysterious loud boom on the evening of July 28, and called the police and Okinawa Meteorological Observatory to inquire about its origins. Neither of the agencies, however, could identify its source.

The noise was reportedly heard over a wide area from Naha to Okinawa City. Officials at the Okinawa Meteorological Observatory said that there was no thunderstorm activity in the area at the time. The police couldn't confirm the source either. Some suspected a sonic boom. According to Shigeaki Suwa, a professor at the Self defense Academy explained that a high speed aircraft sometimes makes a noise like an explosion. "I think that a sonic boom is the most likely cause," he said.
