Group of seniors request easier access to Aquarium

Date Posted: 2003-12-18

Churaumi Aquarium in Okinawa Memorial Park in Motobu has become one of the most popular sightseeing spots on the island. Besides being the second largest of its kind in the world, its main tank boasts the largest acryl panel in the world, a fact that has earned the aquarium a place in the Guinness Book of Records.

Some senior citizens’ groups have complained, however, that access to the facility is too hard for those who have trouble walking. To get to the aquarium entrance from the nearest parking lot requires a long walk down a steep hill, and the same hill must be climbed up when returning to the parking lot.

A senior citizens’ home sent a letter to the prefectural government on Dec. 15, requesting the prefecture take steps to make the access easier. The aquarium staff says they have a special shuttle bus for visitors who are using wheelchairs, and that they are able to provide a shuttle bus if requested. “We can arrange a shuttle bus from the parking lot to the entrance when customers so request in advance. We are happy to provide from and to the parking lot for visitors who find it hard to walk,” he said.
