Hootie & The Blowfish Don't Disappoint

Hootie & The Blowfish didn't disappoint eager fans who attended a free concert at Camp Foster last Friday, despite the move from Foster Field House to indoors at the Foster Field House gym due to bad weather. Although the move inside affected the crowd turnout, the Columbia, South Carolina band's two hour set of relentless, driving music more than compensated for those who attended.

The group performed their entire repertoire of hits, and on a few numbers when the band stopped just short of the chorus, the fans joined in and sang word for word like a well choreographed Broadway play. Between breaks lead singer Darius Rucker described the inspiration behind some of the songs; even going so far as confessing his opposition against band members, Jim Sonefeld, Dean Felber and Mark Bryan, for including what would eventually become one of their biggest hit-single's, "Hold My Hand," on their debut CD Cracked Rear View. Darius now admits he was wrong.

One thing Hootie & Co. seemed to be synonymous with is good music and providing a great show - reminiscent of a new group trying to get a record deal, not like the five-year veterans they are.

After countless hits including songs by R&B group Kool & The Gang's "Get Down On It," Rap group Public Enemy's "Fight The Power," and their 20-minute extended encore rendition of Classic Rock group Georgia Satellites "Keep Your Hands To Yourself," Hootie & The Blowfish had done for free what many groups can't do at all, even for the outlandish fees some demand.

When it was all said and done, the group had gone through several T-shirt changes, performed without stage props or over-the-top special effects and still managed to deliver great music. After experiencing Hootie & The Blowfish in concert your point of reference will forever be changed, and that's a good thing.
