Mayor of Ie Village announced acceptance of parachute training

Date Posted: 1999-03-26

Seitoku Shimabukuro, the mayor of Ie Village, officially announced the village assembly's decision, Tuesday, to accept Ie Island as the site of U.S. military parachute training.

The Defense Facilities Administration Bureau had made a proposal to the village, Mar. 19, to accept parachute training on the U.S. Military installation on the island. The village assembly decided to support the proposal in light of the reduction and consolidation of the US military bases on Okinawa. Shimabukuro assured the village assembly that the officials will insist on the maximum safety of the training. He also said that the village officials are planning to ask for special projects to promote Ie Island in order to compensate for them to accept the parachute training. Officials said that the requests would include a special budget for promoting the island, constructing a civic hall and a industrial waster disposal facility.

The mayor is planning to convey the requests to officials at the Defense Installation Bureau.
