April elections to see record number of women run

Date Posted: 1999-03-26

A record number of women will contest prefectural assembly elections across the nation in April and June, according to a survey by the Asahi Shimbun. Although prefectural elections will not be held in Okinawa, the Asahi said more than 300 women will run for office in other parts of the nation.

While the number of women seeking office has increased, a report in the Mainichi March 23 shows the number of elected seats is on the decrease, with more than 1200 fewer seats being contested this year than there were for the 1995 campaign , a drop of over 3 percent. Reports also indicate that taxpayers are becoming increasingly more vocal in their request for a reduction of seats, stating the nation's economic downturn is already stretching budgets to the limit.
