Usher comes our way

By: Jerry Anderson III

Date Posted: 1999-03-20

Without a doubt R and B/POP singer Usher blew-up in the music industry this past year like the World Trade Center. Enlisting some of Pop music's most prolific songwriters and producers, including Babyface, Jermaine Dupree and New Jack Swing originator Teddy Riley, Usher's sophomore CD My Way, rocketed it's way to the top of the charts- where it stayed for weeks. It seemed like everybody and their brother was playing Usher's hit single "You Make Me Wanna"- including my seven year-old daughter Javier. "Nice&Slow", "Slow Jam", "One Day You'll Be Mine"and the title track " My Way" soon followed with the same admiration. He then parlayed his newfound fame into television and movies, most notably Moesha and The Faculty, respectively. It's definitely Usher's world and we are all just living in it.

If you're tired of watching Usher in the same-old videos, you're in luck; the young star is scheduled to bring his "My Way" Tour to Okinawa March 24 and 25. Complete with live band and dancers, Usher, will perform at Butler Theater on Camp Foster in a show brought here by Positive Productions of Yokohama. The concert starts at 7:30pm with door opening an hour earlier, and is slated to last 1 hour and 5 minutes. Tickets are $40.00 in advance and $45 at door. Tickets are on sale at MCCS ITT Plus, tel. 646-3502, Schilling Recreation Center, tel. 634-4322 and ACTV, tel. 646-3789/5116. Usher merchandise, such as picture booklets, T-shirts and key-chains will be on sale at the concert.

Also scheduled this week is Comedian Thea Vidale, formally of the hit comedy sitcom "Thea". Don't confuse her motherly television personality with her stand-up routine- she can get raw. The comedian will perform at Kadena's Banyan Tree Club March 18/8:00pm and NCO Rocker Club March 17/7:00pm. All shows are free.

Club Chesty, located on Camp Foster, will host a night of Old School R&B, sponsored by Masonic group Obelisk Temple # 187. The group is celebrating their 25 anniversary on Okinawa and all are welcome. Games, surprises and hors d' oeuvres are planned for the evening, as well as music- provided by the one and only Sir Walt D. The casual dress event is scheduled for March 20 from 8:00pm to 1:00am. Donations are a low $5.00 each and ladies get in free before 8:30pm. This is one party you don't want to miss! For more information contact Greg E. Jamison at 090-3329-9377.

This week's CD pick is Cash Money/Universal Recording Artist Juvenile. After releasing a few CD's independently and attracting a loyal local following, the 20 year old Rapper is primed to reach a bigger audience. His current CD, 400 Degrees, is one of the hottest CD's out today. The lead single "HA", finds Juvenile's thick New Orleans southern drawl dropping smart and funny one-liners followed by his knockout punchline, Ha. The song's video should also be seen to really appreciate his unique style of rhyming. Also worth checking out is "Run For It".

That's everything on this week's menu. Feed the ear hole lightly until next week. If you know of a coming entertainment event that you think is news worthy email me at djparlay@hotmail.com
