It's been a while since portable phones have come into our daily lives. Today, one in four people in Japan owns a cellular phone and many consider is to be one of the most essential items for daily use.

When the portable phone first appeared to the public in Japan in 1984, they were called " the shoulder phones" and weighing as much as three kilograms, people had to carry them in a bag hangind from their shoulder. During the past 15 years, they have dramatically evolved and have become very handy and functional.

Recently, another new footprint is added to the history of the cellular phone. A brand new line of handy phones called "D101P" and "C101S." These new models feature a remarkably stylish body and many innovative functions.

D101P is designed to be a communication device rather than just a portable phone. The phone is very light (approximately 69g) and slender (13 mm at the slimmest part) yet, it can operate 210 hours without recharging. In addition to the "normal" cell phone functions, is has voice activated systems called "Voice Function" and "Voice Dial Function." These features make it possible to call someone or apply the phone's functions, such as setting up the alarm, by the users' vocal order.

C101S, which is a sister product of CDMA1 Series, features "fun" options including 10 choices of the receiving melody including movie soundtracks from "Star Wars" and "Gozilla."

One of the most usefuls features in both of D101P and C101S is the 'Bilingual Transcription System.' This function provides either English or Japanese transcription on its display panel. Considering the increasing number of English-speaking customers, officials at Okinawa Cellular say that this feature will eventually appear in all their models.
