Date Posted: 1999-03-14

NTT, the Japan's largest telephone carrier, opened an NTT Research Center in Naha City, Friday. This is the tenth such facility the company has in Japan.

The research center's aim is to study subjects concerning Okinawan original culture and environmental issues in cooperation with universities and private companies in Okinawa. There are two researchers always on duty in the center. The center is connected to other NTT research centers through a computer network that allows the center researchers an instant access to a wide range of topics.

The chief of the laboratory in Okinawa, Seiji Muranaka, commented that the center aims to conduct research into subjects that will benefit Okinawa. "We also want to develop new technologies which can be exported throughout the nation from Okinawa." Muranaka concluded.
