Road tax for US Military servicemen and DoD civilians to increase

Date Posted: 1999-03-02

The road tax for US Military servicemen and civilians will increase from April according to a decision by the US and Japan joint officials. The road tax has been the same for the US Military servicemen and DoD civilians for past 15 years.

According to the reversion of the guidelines of the taxation of the US Military servicemen and civilians, the road tax will be increased about 10 to 15 percent from present. However, even after the increase, the amount of the road tax charged to the SOFA status personnel is only one fifth of what other residents of Japan have to pay.

The tightened road tax in general and bad economic conditions were cited as the main reasons for the increase. Many local governments who are hosts to U.S. military communities had also asked for an increase in road tax repeatedly, but the U.S. side had always resisted an increase until now.
