Okinawa Prefecture to promote Okinawa for location of Dodgers' Town

Date Posted: 1999-03-02

Okinawa Prefecture Government decided to promote the prefecture as the site of the planned 'Dodgers' Town' baseball training facility, Monday. The idea for the facility was born by the management of Los Angeles Dodgers Major League baseball team who decided to seek to establish a 'Dodgers' Town' in Asia. The facility will be used as a training facility for the team.

Dodgers' Vice-president Tommy Lasorda, is scheduled to visit Okinawa Sunday, to inspect Japanese baseball teams currently having their winter training camps in Okinawa. Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine is scheduled to meet Lasorda during his visit and ask for the team to consider to build the 'Dodgers' Town' in Okinawa.

The team has decided to actively scout gifted players from Asia to beef up their team. Taiwan, Korea and China are also promoting themselves as the possible location for Dodgers' Town. Okinawa decided to join the race because Okinawa is the site for many Japanese pro baseball winter training camps. The plans promoters say that that means Okinawa has a good climate and environment for a training facility.
