Traffic safety campaign summed up

Okinawa Prefecture Police has announced statistics on the traffic safety campaign conducted over ten-day period July 9 through 19.

According to the police, there were 136 traffic accidents during the period, including two fatalities. The number is 30 more than during similar campaign a year ago. This year’s campaign was aimed at preventing drunk driving, for which Okinawa has the dubious fame to be the worst in the nation, and traffic accidents involving motor cycles.

During the campaign, police stopped 102 people for driving without a valid driver’s license. 445 people were apprehended for drunk driving, and 998 were caught for speeding. The police promise to conduct similar campaigns in the future in order to improve the situation.
