Number of Okinawa bound tourists booming

Date Posted: 1998-07-30

The number of tourists visiting Okinawa is set to reach new records, mostly because of great discounts introduced on flights between mainland and Okinawa as a part of Okinawa’s revitalizing package last year. Another factor is the depreciation of the yen, notably against the U.S. dollar that has made Okinawa much more competitive against places like Guam, Hawaii and Micronesia.

According to figures by Japan Travel Bureau (JTB), the number of visitors increased 18 percent in April from a year before. The increase in May was a whopping 41%, while June figures were up 23% and July is estimated at 16 %. According to agency officials, Okinawa was the number one travel destination in Japan in May. If the trend continues as officials expect, the total number of visitors this year will exceed four million.
