Navy teams to compete in dragon boat races

The U.S. Navy Dragon Boat Race Team will participate in the Nago City Mayorís Cup Dragon Boat Race, Sunday at Nago Fishing Port, located along Highway 58.

15 women teams, including the U.S. Navy womenís team, and one team from Singapore, will compete in the event, bringing the total number of teams to 123. Last yearís winner will also be present, as will one team from mainland Japan.

Opening ceremonies for the race begin at 9 a.m. The menís qualifying race, where 108 teams will race a total of 600 meters, starts at 9:40 a.m. Three teams will compete in each heat and all teams will receive an award. The womenís race will begin at 3:50 and each heat is expected to last 10 minutes.

The top 27 male teams will be announced at 4:00 p.m., and will begin racing at 4:50 p.m. The womenís quarter final race, composed of the top nine teams, will be announced at 5:00 p.m. and the competition will commence at 5:50 p.m. Semi final races will take place afterwards, and at 6:35 p.m. the women will compete for top honors, while their male counterparts will begin racing at 6:50.

The day will prove to be a test of strength and determination for all involved, including the two U.S. Navy teams who will participate in the competition. A bus will be leaving from CFAO Transportation, Bldg. 3571 on Kadena AB, at 7:00 a.m. Sunday morning. All those interested in attending are invited to come and cheer on the U.S. Navy Dragon Boat Race Teams.
