Three Yanbaru Kuinas missing in wild

Date Posted: 1999-01-08

Three Yanbaru Kuinas (Water Rails), which had been artificially incubated and raised by the personnel of the Neo Park Okinawa in Nago City, were released to their natural habitat in the northern Okinawa, Dec. 24. The laboratory at the Neo Park investigating the living habits of local wild birds has followed up the lives of the released birds as a part of the research to the ecological system in the area.

On Jan. 11, the Okinawa Prefectural Animal Preserving and Nature Division announced that one of the Yanbaru Kuinas that had been released to the wild had died, probably eaten by another wild animal like mongoose.

The research team using a miniature radio device placed on the wing discovered the death of the bird. The two other kuinas are missing and researchers suspect their radio devices have fallen off from their wings. The researchers have not been able to determine whether the two water rails are still surviving in the wild.
