Governor and Director General of Defense Agency meet

Date Posted: 1999-01-08

Okinawa Governor Keiichi Inamine met with Defense Agency Director Hosei Noroda at the Okinawa Prefectural Office, Tuesday. The topic of their discussion during the meeting was the plan to relocate a number of U.S. Military bases within the prefecture, most notably MCAS Futenma and the U.S. Military Port in Naha.

After the conference, Noroda toured the reclaimed site outside Camp Kinser in Urasoe City, which is the proposed replacement location for the Naha Military Port. He also visited MCAS Futenma.

At a press conference held in a hotel in Naha City, Noroda said that while discussing options to relocating MCAS Futenma, he reiterated the government’s position that they still consider a floating facility off Camp Schwab in Henoko to be the best choice. He reassured that the central government has no intention to construct the facility over the objections by Okinawa Prefecture and local residents. Governor Inamine favors building a new land-based heliport in the northern part of the island with understanding that the facility would be jointly used by the U.S. Military and civilian airlines. He has also proposed stating a deadline for the facility’s return.

Governor Inamine stressed that one of the most important aspects of the projects is to ensure that "We have a plan for the effective use of the returned base land. Both reached the consensus that whatever is done the net effect has to be to boost the local economy.
