Okinawa teacher selected as state finalist

Date Posted: 1999-01-08

Okinawa second grade teacher, Carol Linda Shirley, from Kadena Elementary School has been chosen as one of the DoDDS state finalists for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching for 1998 in the elementary science category. The announcement of the winners in each category will be announced in the spring of 99.

Shirley made it to the state finalist tier with her philosophy that science education is as important as reading and math, and should be based on standards. Her lessons inter-connect and emphasize real life situations. She utilizes the hands-on approach, as well as encouraging the student to be investigators who identify the problems and solutions through inquiry. The students then communicate what they find out in writing and orally.
