Drunk driver crashes after traveling through Camp Foster

Date Posted: 2003-04-12

A man apparently under the influence of alcohol drove his car into Camp Foster early Monday. Police say the driver ignored the Japanese guard's orders to stop when he entered through the camp gate. He drove through the base, finally crashing into a vehicle military police had parked in front of the Kitamae Gate in order to stop the speeding car. The driver suffered a broken leg, and his car was totaled. Investigators say the man recklessly drove around the base for about seven minutes, with the guard chasing him in another car.

Police have questioned the 48-year-old Japanese man's family and consider it unlikely the incident was a form of protest over the U.S.-led war on Iraq, but will wait for him to recover before questioning him further.

The man reportedly smelled of alcohol. Police suspect he drove under influence of alcohol and violated special criminal laws under the Japan-U.S. Status of Forces Agreement.
