Elderly man kills his doctor

Date Posted: 1998-07-30

An elderly patient killed his doctor, Monday, after he apparently became distressed over his continuing problem with tinnitus and blamed his doctor for not finding a cure. According to Itoman Police, Matsuto Ogimi, 81, was paying his usual visit to his doctor, complaining about his ears. It seems that Ogimi had been visiting the hospital regularly for the same problem since May.

Whe his doctor, Satoshi Kamiya, 43, tuned his back to the patient in order to write a medicine prescription, Ogimi attacked the doctor with a kitchen knife stabbing him in the back. One of the stab wounds reached the doctors' liver. The attack occurred in the middle of the day and the hospital was in full operation. One of the nurses on duty called the police who arrested Ogimi immediately.

According to Itoman Police, Ogimi had lived in a old persons' nursing home near the hospital since February. On the day of the attack, Ogimi had complained about his ear trouble to the nursing home staff. At the same time, he stole a knife from the nursing home's kitchen. According to nursing home staff, Ogimi had been complaining about his ear since May and had visited the doctor since several times a week.

According to Okinawa Prefecture Nanbu Hospital administrators, this is the first time ever that one of their doctors has been killed while in duty. The incident prompted a special fact finding visit to the hospital by Okinawa Prefecture Assembly Member Yoshimitsu Arakaki, and Hospital Administrative Office Director Hiroaki Nako.
