Ethnic Art Festival planned for Miyako

The International Ethnic Art festival and the 40th Kyushu Ethnic Art Conference are scheduled to be held in Miyako Island concurrently beginning Nov. 1. The festival will be dedicated to performing ethnic arts and will offer an excellent opportunity to see many nearly extinct forms of dance and other performances from various cultures.

The Agency of Cultural Affairs, the Prefectural Board of Education and Hirara City, Miyako, are the main sponsors of the event. The venue for the festival will be the Matida Civic Theater in Hirara City. The occasion will mark the first time the prestigious festival will be held in Okinawa.

The theme of the festival is "Shaman Acts." Participants are expected from Saha Autonomic Republic in Russia, Korea and Vietnam. Performers from Kyushu and Okinawa will also attend.
