Urasoe's Maeda tunnel open

Maeda Tunnel, offering a shortcut from Urasoe City Hall area to Ishimine in Shuri, was opened to traffic in a ceremony, Wednesday. The construction work will be completed by September. The new tunnel is 92 m long and 28.7 m wide.

The construction of the tunnel was said to have been difficult because of numerous archeological sites in the area including the grave site of Chiken Tamagusuku. The decision to locate the National Kumiodori Theater in Urasoe will also benefit from the construction of the tunnel.
