AMERICAFEST '98 Offers Aircraft, Music, Food, Fun

Date Posted: 1998-07-30

It is again the time for Kadena's Americafest. The festival continues to attract more visitors that any other festival on the island despite complaints that it is has become too big, too small, too boring, too hectic, too hot and it is too difficult to reach. Maybe true, but not likely. Year after year visitors crowd the premises and are seemingly happy to explore displays of aircraft at close, enjoy music and other entertainment and in general, just to have plain good time.

A performance by the American rock band Great White July 5th and fireworks display for July 4th and 5th are among the many highlights planned for Kadena's annual open house, which will be held here July 2-5.

Great White is a hard rock band inspired by Led Zepplin, AC/DC and Aerosmith. The band has released more than 10 albums with their most recent release, Let It Rock, debuting in 1995. They will rock the Americafest stage July 5th from 8 p.m. to 9:45 p.m. Another special attraction this year is the all-girl band Allure. The group will perform Sunday from 4 to 4:45 p.m.

Additional musical entertainment throughout the event will include performances by the Fast Forward Jazz ; Clay Sun Union, a local alternative rock band ; Latin Connection; the Okinawa Community Choir; Memphis Gold, a blues band; and Cry Wolf, a blues/rock band . Performances by a variety of youth groups will also take place throughout the event.

In addition to the musical entertainment, a variety of aircraft also will be on display. Among the aircraft expected are the AH-1, A-10 Thunderbolt 11, AH-1 Super Cobra, AV-8 Harrier 11, C-9 Nightingale, C-12 Huron , C-21, c-130 Hercules, CH-46 Sea Knight, CH-53 Super Stallion, E-3b Sentry, F/A-18 Hornet, f-15c Eagle, F-16 Fighting Falcon , HH-60G Pave Hawk ,KC-135R Stratotanker, RC-135, MC-130H Combat Talon 11, MC-130P Combat Shadow and UH-1. Japan Air Self Defense Force aircraft expected include the C-1, CH-47j, F-4, MU-2, P-3 T-2, T-4 US -1, U-125 and V-107. Both the KC-135R and E-3B aircraft are expected to be open for viewing for several hours each day. Other attractions for the four-day event include information booths explaining the missions of Kadena-based squadrons; the Heritage Museum, a special historical display that opened to popular acclaim during last year's event and a variety of American and ethnic food booths.

Gates1, 2, 3, and 4 open to the public at 2 p.m., July 2nd and at 11 a.m. each of the remaining three days. Gates close to incoming traffic at 9 p.m. each evening. Stage events run until 10 P.M. Americafest '98 will shut down at 11 p.m. each evening.

For safety reasons, no pets, rollerblades, roller-skates, skateboards, bicycles or glass containers will be allowed in the Americafest area. Guest, especially children, also are encouraged to bring plenty of sunscreen , wear hats to protect against the strong mid-summer sun, and wear comfortable, closed-toe shoes.
