Futto Land Restaurant Review

Futto Land located on Highway 58, just beyond Tony Romas, is one of the most unique restaurants around. The main entrees, although prepared and served in many different ways, comes from the rare bird known as the ostrich. The restaurant is open from ll:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily and closed on Monday. You can find the restaurant by parking your car just beyond the Esso Gas Station, in front of Tony Romas and walking up the next street toward Naha. The Futto Land sign with a picture of an Ostrich prominently landmarks the spot, in front of a set of steps that leads you up to the restaurant. The interior decor is cozy and quaint and has a warm relaxing atmosphere.

In Okinawa there is only one ostrich farm, located in the Nakajin area of Nago. They breed and raise ostriches for human consumption. Ostrich meat is the newest and healthiest red meat available today. Although the ostriches have been around since prehistoric times, it has only been in the last ten years or so that they have been domestically raised, in the United States and only four years here in Okinawa.

Initially, the breeder market developed slowly, with very few ostriches being slaughtered and available for the consumer. Today, the breeder market has been transformed, into a strong and growing commercial market. One of the most interesting things about the ostrich is that everything on it is useful. The skin can be used for hand bags. Feathers can be used to decorate hats, or even a fancy wrap.

In preparation, ostrich meat can be substituted as a meat item in any of our favorite recipes, as a very lean meat. Ostrich is best cooked to rare or medium-rare because of the low fat content of the meat. Ostrich is similar in taste, texture and appearance to beef. It is comparable to beef in iron and protein content. However, ostrich is less than half the fat of chicken and turkey. It is also two-thirds less fat than beef and pork. In addition it weighs in much lower in calories. Ostrich meat contains fewer than half the calories of turkey or chicken and almost two thirds less the calories of beef and pork.

Futto Land offers ostrich meat in a wide variety of entrees. Entrees include curried ostrich, ostrich steak, sashimi, slightly grilled sashimi, ostrich sauteed in butter sauce, ostrich hamburgers, ostrich soup, ostrich omelets, sweet & sour ostrich and much, much more. The prices are very reasonable from as little as 700 for an ostrich cheese roll to 2500 for ostrich & prawns. Each dinner meal includes soup, salad, rice or toast and your choice of cola, tea, or coffee. The meat has become an increasingly popular delicacy both in the states and now here in Okinawa. So if you want to have your steak and eat it too, Futto Land is just for you.
