Okinawa nation's worst in drinking and driving

Date Posted: 1998-07-10

Okinawa Prefecture Police announced Thursday that the prefecture has earned the dubious distinction of being the worst offender in the nation when it comes to drinking and driving. 6,642 persons were charged with drunk driving offenses during the first five months of the year. The number exceeds the number of cases in Fukuoka, the second worst, by more than 300.

An officer at the Traffic Section of Okinawa Prefectural Police commented that they have to beef up their efforts to combat the problem. The police began what they called the "Weekend Night Campaign" from the beginning of this year which has netted an average 83 offenders per day. The officer lamented the fact that there are no trains in Okinawa, and the public's general lenient attitude towards drunk driving. "Okinawan people are night owls and like to stay out late, and everyone seems to have a very cavalier attitude towards drunk driving," he said.
