Power failure leaves thousands without power in Ishigaki

Date Posted: 1998-07-10

About 7,000 households were left without electricity, Jul. 8 & 9, in Ishigaki City when two generators at the local power plant broke down. Okinawa Electric Power Co. engineers eventually were able to restore the power by using auxiliary generator units.

According to company officials, Nr. 1 generator at the company's Ishigaki plan first failed at 7:34 a.m. Another unit broke down about six hours later. Company officials said that the reason for the problem with the Nr. 1 generator was engine failure. They could not specify the reason for the failure of the second generator. They estimate that it will take two to three months to repair the damaged units.
