Tourist diver drowns in Miyako

Date Posted: 2003-04-05

A 52-year-old male tourist from Nara Prefecture drowned while on a scuba diving excursion to Yaebise reef some 10 kilometers off Miyako Island. Yaebise is by far the largest reef off Miyako and is a very popular dive tour destination.

The police investigation notes Kyoshi Inoue and three other tourists, accompanied by two instructors from a local diving shop, had gone to the reef around noon. The instructors said that the group had held a safety meeting on their boat before descending into the water. At the meeting they had decided to meet back at the boat after 45 minutes of diving.

After the time was up, everyone ascended to the surface and the instructors went onboard in order to help everyone to get back. When it was Inoue's turn, the instructors discovered that he was floating face down under water. They pulled him in and started resuscitation efforts immediately. He was taken to a hospital, but he died without gaining consciousness two hours later.
